Bone Densitometry

Osteoporosis is a major health problem in the United States today, affecting 28 million people. Women represent 80% of the affected population, and many of these women do not presently get any preventive care. Likewise, many women with the disease are not presently getting needed treatment. Almost one of every two Caucasian women will experience an osteoporotic fracture at some point in her lifetime. A woman’s risk of hip fracture alone equals her combined risk of developing breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer. Men, too, are susceptible to osteoporosis; there are now 2 million men in the United States with osteoporosis and more than 3 million others at risk.

Repercussions from osteoporosis can be devastating. Pains due to fracture, loss of independence, and onset of depression have all been linked to osteoporosis. All those who fracture their hips lose some mobility, and least ½ are unable to resume walking, and ¼ die within a year of the fracture.

Financial costs to our health care system are also high. A recent United States study showed that the total cost of caring for osteoporotic fractures approached $14 billion yearly.

Now, more than ever before, it is important for you as a patient to know your risk for osteoporosis. At Cumberland Family Care we offer the most precise evaluation for diagnosing osteoporosis.  A Bone Densitometry Unit (Dexa Scan) is used to perform these tests which are safe, simple, noninvasive, and takes only minutes.
